Best All-Season Tyres 205/55 R16

All-season tyres in 205/55 R16 now cover a wide price span — from about 54 EUR to 118 EUR per tyre at the same German retailer — yet most of them carry the same EU label: class C for rolling resistance, class B for wet grip and 70–72 dB. The label alone rarely separates them. What does is the independent testing, and here the most useful fact is that ADAC ran its 2024 all-season test in exactly this size, 205/55 R16 94V.

We ranked ten current tyres from nine brands, all carrying the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, using the EU label shown for the exact size and load index, independent tests from ADAC, Auto Bild and (second-hand) auto motor und sport, retailer reviews and October 2026 prices. For every tyre we state which version we priced: 91H, 91V or 94V XL.

This is desk research: we have not driven on these tyres. Where a result comes from a different size, we name the size and year every time.

Methodology note

Prices, EU label values, EPREL IDs and review figures come from the reifen.com product page for the exact 205/55 R16 version named (opened in October 2026); prices are per tyre including VAT, excluding fitting and shipping. The EU product database EPREL itself could not be reached, so EPREL IDs are given as shown by the retailer. Manufacturer pages were opened for Goodyear, Pirelli, Michelin (both CrossClimate models) and Nokian; for Continental, Bridgestone, Hankook, Vredestein and Kumho the manufacturer page could not be opened, so the retailer page is the source and the link. Test results come from ADAC (2024, 205/55 R16 94V; 2025, 225/45 R17; 2026, 185/65 R15) and Auto Bild (2026 qualifying round, 225/45 R17); auto motor und sport 2026 (195/55 R16) grades were seen only in a retailer summary. Tyre Reviews blocked access. We did not examine tread life claims, ice grip, or results older than 2024 except where stated.

Key parameter

EU tyre label for the exact size: rolling resistance / wet grip / noise

The EU label is the only figure every maker must publish for each size and load index, so it is the one fair like-for-like comparison. Values are those shown for the exact 205/55 R16 version on reifen.com, with the EPREL ID; where the manufacturer's figure differs, we say so.

8.3 Our verdict

Goodyear's Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 is the best-supported choice in 205/55 R16: it won ADAC's 2024 test in exactly this size with the only "gut" of 16, and its 94V XL version carries a class A rolling-resistance label. Pirelli's Cinturato All Season SF3 has the best wet-grip label (A) and strong 2025–2026 results, but none in this size. Continental's AllSeasonContact 2 has the most consistent recent ADAC record, at a premium price. For value, Vredestein's Quatrac and Hankook's Kinergy 4S2 were both tested in this size by ADAC (2.8 and 2.7) and cost 74–81 EUR. Kumho's Solus 4S HA32 is the cheapest 3PMSF option at 54 EUR, with the caveat that ADAC tested its HA32+ sibling. Michelin's CrossClimate 2 is quiet and well reviewed but the dearest tyre here, and its successor, the CrossClimate 3, has yet to show in independent tests why it costs over 100 EUR. Whatever you choose, check the exact load index: the label can differ between the 91 and 94 XL versions of the same tyre.

EU tyre label

What the EU tyre label tells you — and what it leaves out

Since 1 May 2021, Regulation (EU) 2020/740 has required a label on every new C1 (car) tyre. It shows three graded values — fuel efficiency (rolling resistance) and wet grip, each on a scale from A to E, and external rolling noise in decibels with a class from A to C — plus pictograms for tyres that meet the severe-snow test and, where relevant, ice grip. Rolling resistance, wet grip, noise and snow grip are measured to UN Regulation No 117; ice grip refers to ISO 19447. Suppliers must enter each tyre in the EU product database EPREL before it is placed on the market.

What the label omits matters more for all-season tyres than for any other type. It says nothing about dry braking, handling, snow braking beyond the pass/fail 3PMSF pictogram, or wear. Article 13(3) of the regulation lets the Commission add abrasion and mileage information only once reliable test methods exist. The label is also size- and version-specific: Goodyear lists its 91V as class C, while the 94V XL is class A. Always read the label for the exact index you are buying.

Winter law

3PMSF vs M+S, and what counts as a winter tyre in Germany and Austria

"M+S" (mud and snow) is a manufacturer's own marking with no performance test behind it. The three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF, or Alpine symbol) is different: under UN Regulation No 117 a C1 tyre may carry it only if it reaches a snow grip index of at least 1.07 against a standard reference test tyre in a braking-on-snow test. All ten tyres in this ranking carry 3PMSF.

Germany. Section 2(3a) of the road traffic regulations (StVO) says a driver may only drive a motor vehicle in black ice, snow, slush, ice or frost conditions if all wheels have tyres that meet the requirements of section 36(4) of the vehicle registration regulations (StVZO). The rule is situational — there is no fixed date. We read the StVO text on dejure.org because gesetze-im-internet.de was unreachable, and we could not open StVZO section 36(4) itself; for current transitional rules on older M+S-only tyres, check that source.

Austria. According to ÖAMTC, cars and light vans under 3.5 t may only be driven in wintry conditions between 1 November and 15 April if winter tyres are fitted on all four wheels (or, on roads fully or almost fully covered by snow or ice, snow chains on at least one drive axle). Tyres marked M+S, M.S., M&S or with the snowflake symbol count, including all-season tyres. The minimum tread depth for winter use is 4 mm for radial tyres (5 mm for diagonal). ÖAMTC quotes fines of around 100 EUR, and up to 10,000 EUR if others are endangered.

Practical point: a 3PMSF all-season tyre satisfies the marking rules in both countries, but in Austria it stops counting as a winter tyre once the tread falls below 4 mm; plan to replace it earlier than a summer tyre if you drive there in winter.

Independent tests

What the independent tests show — size and year named each time

Only one recent major test was run in exactly this size: ADAC 2024, 205/55 R16 94V (published 15 July 2024, 16 tyres). Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 was the only "gut" at 2.4, followed by Pirelli Cinturato All Season SF2 2.6 (the predecessor of the SF3), Hankook Kinergy 4S2 2.7, Michelin CrossClimate 2 2.7, Kumho Solus 4S HA32+ 2.8, Vredestein Quatrac 2.8 and Falken EuroAll Season AS210 3.1. ADAC noted the SF2's limited tread life — about 33,000 km against more than 60,000 km for the Goodyear.

auto motor und sport 2026 (second-hand)195/55 R16Continental and Pirelli SF3 "sehr gut"; Bridgestone, Hankook "gut"

Two lessons. First, rankings move between sizes: the Goodyear went from test winner in 205/55 R16 (2024) and 225/45 R17 (2025) to 3.1 in 185/65 R15 (2026). Second, retailer pages mix up generations — reifen.com shows the SF2's 2024 grade next to the SF3. ADAC grades work like school marks: lower is better.

Euro 7

Euro 7 and tyre abrasion: what changes and when

Regulation (EU) 2024/1257, known as Euro 7, is the first EU vehicle-emission law to bring tyre abrasion — the microplastic dust a tyre sheds as it wears — under type-approval. For new types of cars and vans it applies from 29 November 2026, and for all new cars and vans from 29 November 2027.

The tyre timetable is separate and later. For C1 tyres (the class all tyres in this ranking belong to), abrasion requirements apply to type-approvals from 1 July 2028 and to tyres placed on the market from 1 July 2030; C2 and C3 tyres follow in 2030 and 2032. The regulation does not write a numerical limit into its main text: the recitals say the Commission should set abrasion limits by delegated act, based on methods being developed in the UN vehicle-regulation forum, in support of the EU aim of cutting microplastic releases by 30% by 2030.

For buyers today this has two consequences. None of the tyres here can yet be compared on a regulated abrasion figure, because none exists: the EU label (Regulation 2020/740) has no wear or mileage field, and its Article 13(3) only allows one to be added once a reliable test method is available. And the only comparable wear evidence comes from independent tests. ADAC's 2024 205/55 R16 test gave the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3 an environment sub-grade of 1.8 — the best in that field — against 2.2 for the Hankook, Michelin CrossClimate 2 and Vredestein, and 2.3 for the Kumho HA32+.

No manufacturer in this list publishes an abrasion figure for 205/55 R16. Michelin publishes a rolling-resistance coefficient (7.11 kg/t for the CrossClimate 2), which is about efficiency, not wear.

Buying advice

Before you buy: DOT date, load and speed index, and XL

Read the DOT date. The production date is the four-digit code at the end of the DOT number on the sidewall: the first two digits are the week, the last two the year, so 1024 means week 10 of 2024. ADAC advises that a tyre sold as new should not be older than two years; the German tyre trade association treats tyres up to three years old as "factory-new" and up to five years as "new" if stored properly. ADAC recommends not using car tyres beyond about ten years, and winter tyres beyond about eight.

Match the load and speed index. In this ranking you will meet three versions:

IndexMax load per tyreMax speedTyres here
91H615 kg210 km/hContinental, Bridgestone, Vredestein, Kumho
91V615 kg240 km/hNokian, Michelin CC3
94V XL670 kg240 km/hGoodyear, Pirelli, Hankook, Michelin CC2

Check the minimum load and speed index given in your vehicle documents before choosing a version; the same tyre model can come in all three.

Understand XL. "Extra Load" marks a reinforced tyre with a higher load index — 94 (670 kg) instead of 91 (615 kg) in this size. Ask the fitter which inflation pressures your car maker gives for it. XL versions can also carry different label values: Goodyear's 94V XL is class A for rolling resistance, its 91V class C.

Compare like with like. Prices here are for one tyre at one retailer. Fitting, balancing and valve costs come on top.

Methodology

How this score is built

The score is the mean of four component scores — each carries equal weight and each rests on a named source. The full procedure is described in the methodology.

  1. 01Composition and specification

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. 02Evidence and studies

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. 03Owner feedback

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. 04Cost and value

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which all-season tyre is best in 205/55 R16?

On the evidence available, the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen-3. It was the only tyre of 16 to earn "gut" (2.4) in ADAC's 2024 test in exactly this size, and its 94V XL version has a class A rolling-resistance label.

Are all-season tyres legal as winter tyres in Germany?

Yes, if they carry the three-peak mountain snowflake (Alpine) symbol. Section 2(3a) StVO requires tyres meeting section 36(4) StVZO in wintry conditions. All ten tyres here carry 3PMSF.

Do all-season tyres count as winter tyres in Austria?

Yes. ÖAMTC states that tyres marked M+S or with the snowflake symbol count, including all-season tyres, between 1 November and 15 April in wintry conditions — but only with at least 4 mm of tread on radial tyres.

What is the difference between M+S and 3PMSF?

M+S is a manufacturer marking with no required test. 3PMSF is only allowed after a snow braking test under UN Regulation No 117, with a snow grip index of at least 1.07 against a reference tyre for car tyres.

Should I buy 91 or 94 XL?

Follow the load and speed index in your vehicle documents. 91 carries 615 kg per tyre, 94 XL carries 670 kg. Note that the label can differ between the two: the Goodyear 94V XL is class A for rolling resistance, its 91V class C.

Does the EU label show tyre wear?

No. Regulation (EU) 2020/740 covers rolling resistance, wet grip, noise and snow/ice pictograms. Wear and mileage can only be added once a reliable test method exists. Euro 7 will bring abrasion rules for C1 tyres from 1 July 2028 (new types) and 1 July 2030 (all tyres on the market).

How old can a new tyre be?

ADAC advises buying tyres no older than two years. Check the four-digit DOT code: week then year, so 1024 means week 10 of 2024.

Is the cheapest tyre here worth buying?

The Kumho Solus 4S HA32 at 54.28 EUR has the same C / B label classes as several premium tyres and carries 3PMSF. ADAC rated its HA32+ variant 2.8 in this size in 2024, but we found no test of the exact model sold.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
