What matters here

What we look at in Home & garden

This is the category where declarations are hardest to verify and where the difference between a good and a bad purchase shows up slowest. A mattress reveals itself after a year, paint after the second winter, a cordless tool after the battery has been through two hundred cycles.

We therefore lean on what can be documented. For mattresses: foam density in kilograms per cubic metre and spring count rather than marketing names for layers, plus the firmness scale the maker actually publishes. For paint: coverage per litre at the declared number of coats, wet-scrub resistance class and VOC content. For power tools: battery capacity in watt-hours instead of volts alone, whether the platform is shared across the range, and what a replacement pack costs — which for cordless equipment is often a third of the price of the tool.

Warranty terms carry more weight here than elsewhere, because they are the manufacturer's own statement about expected lifespan. A ten-year mattress warranty that excludes a four-centimetre dip is a different promise from a ten-year warranty that covers two centimetres, and that distinction decides more about long-term satisfaction than any single comfort rating.

● 03 — How we score

A ranking is not
a bestseller list.
It is built from data.

/ 01

BestProductRanking combines an analysis of composition and specification, available third-party studies and verified owner feedback — to show what actually works rather than what has the largest advertising budget.

  • 01We analyse

Every category has its own protocol and a defined key parameter — not an editor's impression.

  • 02We verify

Every manufacturer claim is checked against an independent source: a study, a certificate or a public register. Anything unconfirmed is labelled as a declaration.

  • 03We publish

The underlying data and the scoring formula are public for every ranking.

04 / Methodology

Four sources.
One protocol per category.

The 0–10 score comes from the same four components, whether the subject is a television, a tyre or a face cream. Each carries equal weight, and the sources are listed with every ranking.

  1. 01Composition and specification

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. 02Evidence and studies

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. 03Owner feedback

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. 04Cost and value

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

How we score

Principles

Four sources.
No guesswork.

Every score rests on manufacturer documentation, available studies and certificates, verified owner feedback from extended use, and the relationship between price and what the product delivers. We do not sell positions in a ranking and no brand sees its score before publication.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
