What matters here

What we look at in Services & finance

Services are the category where the advertised figure and the contractual figure are almost never the same number. A broadband package advertised at a headline speed is sold with a guaranteed minimum buried in the contract, and only that second number carries any obligation.

So we read contracts rather than landing pages. For broadband: the guaranteed minimum speed, the upload figure, the length of the commitment, and what the price becomes when the promotional period ends — frequently within twelve months. For banking: the total annual cost including account fees, card fees, ATM and currency conversion charges, and the conditions under which a fee-free account stops being fee-free. For insurance: the exclusions, the excess, and what the sum insured actually covers.

The second component is what happens when something goes wrong. Published complaint-handling times, whether support is reachable outside the automated menu, and whether the provider is bound by an alternative dispute resolution scheme. In a service, that is the equivalent of build quality in a product.

Everything is scored on total cost over the full contract term, never on the monthly figure in the advertisement.

● 03 — How we score

A ranking is not
a bestseller list.
It is built from data.

/ 01

BestProductRanking combines an analysis of composition and specification, available third-party studies and verified owner feedback — to show what actually works rather than what has the largest advertising budget.

  • 01We analyse

Every category has its own protocol and a defined key parameter — not an editor's impression.

  • 02We verify

Every manufacturer claim is checked against an independent source: a study, a certificate or a public register. Anything unconfirmed is labelled as a declaration.

  • 03We publish

The underlying data and the scoring formula are public for every ranking.

04 / Methodology

Four sources.
One protocol per category.

The 0–10 score comes from the same four components, whether the subject is a television, a tyre or a face cream. Each carries equal weight, and the sources are listed with every ranking.

  1. 01Composition and specification

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. 02Evidence and studies

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. 03Owner feedback

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. 04Cost and value

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

How we score

Principles

Four sources.
No guesswork.

Every score rests on manufacturer documentation, available studies and certificates, verified owner feedback from extended use, and the relationship between price and what the product delivers. We do not sell positions in a ranking and no brand sees its score before publication.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
