FAQ

What to know about our rankings

The questions we hear most often from readers and from manufacturers. The answers apply to every category on the site.

How is a BestProductRanking ranking produced?

Every product in a category goes through the same protocol. The overall 0–10 score is the mean of four components: composition and specification, evidence and studies, owner feedback, and cost and value. The sources behind each are listed with the ranking.

What do the verbal grades mean?

The thresholds are fixed and public for every category: 9.0–10 excellent, 8.0–8.9 good, 7.0–7.9 fair, 6.0–6.9 acceptable, below 6.0 poor. Products scoring under 7.0 are not published in the ranking.

Can a brand buy a place in the ranking?

No. We do not sell positions or scores, we publish no sponsored content, and no brand sees its result before publication. Affiliate links affect neither the order nor the scoring.

Can scores be compared across categories?

No. A score of 8.8 for a tyre and 8.8 for a laptop describe entirely different sets of parameters. Scores are comparable only within one category, which is why the catalogue never mixes sections in a single table.

How often are rankings updated?

Prices are refreshed weekly, the composition of a ranking monthly, and a full re-analysis of a category runs every 12 months — or immediately after a change of specification or formulation.

Is a more expensive product better?

Not always. A higher price usually comes with a better composition or specification, but not with better reviews after a year or lower running costs. That is why cost and value is scored separately and shown with every product.

Who prepares the analyses?

The editorial team, working to the published protocol. We use manufacturer documentation, results from independent laboratories and consumer organisations, and public registers — and every source is named with the ranking.

Where does the data come from?

From manufacturer documentation (specifications, ingredient lists, safety data sheets, declarations of conformity), published laboratory and consumer-organisation studies, public registers, and verified owner reviews written after extended use. Every ranking states what we used.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
