Best Face Sunscreens SPF 50

A daily face sunscreen in the EU can carry two labels that matter: the SPF number and, separately, the UVA circle logo. The EU recommendation behind both asks for UVA protection of at least one third of the SPF, but manufacturers almost never publish the actual UVA protection factor. That single missing number is what this ranking is built around.

We compared ten SPF 50 and 50+ face products currently sold by EU retailers, from budget drugstore fluids to premium pharmacy brands, using the manufacturers' own pages, the EU regulations on UV filters, and what independent testers such as Stiftung Warentest made public. Prices are normalised to price per 100 ml because pack sizes range from 40 to 50 ml.

The short version: only one brand here publishes its measured UVA protection, four of the ten were in Stiftung Warentest's 2025 face-sunscreen test but the grades are paywalled, and several well-known brands do not even show their ingredient list on the product page we could open.

Methodology note

Desk research, October 2026. We did not test any product on skin or in a laboratory. Every figure comes from a page we opened in this session: manufacturer product pages, EUR-Lex for Recommendation 2006/647/EC and Regulations (EU) 2022/1176 and 2022/2195, ISO's catalogue entry for ISO 23675:2024, the free parts of Stiftung Warentest's test pages, Which?'s testing method page and Consumentenbond's sunscreen pages.

Known gaps: Stiftung Warentest, Which? and Consumentenbond results are paywalled, so we report only that a product was tested, never a grade we did not see. La Roche-Posay's own site could not be opened (redirect on .de, blocked on .ie), so its details and link come from the retailer notino.de. For Nivea we could open only the face-sun category page, not the product page. Eucerin's product pages did not show ingredient lists in the version we fetched. All prices are notino.de shelf prices (not discount-code prices) seen in October 2026; they change often. Ratings are those shown on the brand or retailer page at the time. Öko-Test and OCU pages could not be reached.

Key parameter

Published UVA protection next to the labelled SPF

SPF only describes UVB; the EU asks for UVA protection of at least one third of the SPF but brands rarely print the figure. We record the UVA-PF or PPD value where the manufacturer publishes it, otherwise the exact UVA wording on the brand's page, or 'not published'.

7.7 Our verdict

No product here tells you exactly how much UVA protection you get, except Beauty of Joseon — and its own numbers show a thin margin over the EU one-third rule. For most buyers Garnier's Super UV fluid with hyaluronic acid is the best overall pick: full ingredient list, six named UV filters, no fragrance in the INCI, inclusion in Stiftung Warentest's 2025 face test and 26.25 euros per 100 ml. Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun is the most transparent and fragrance-free, at a fair price, but has no EU independent test and contains DHHB. Eucerin's Oil Control is the best documented choice for oily skin, with a fragrance-free formula and a Stiftung Warentest entry. Nivea's Invisible Daily fluid is equally cheap but poorly documented online. La Roche-Posay costs nearly twice as much per millilitre as Garnier without publishing a UVA figure. Whatever you buy, check the UVA circle on the pack and use enough: the EU test quantity is 2 mg/cm².

EU rules

What SPF 50+ and the UVA circle actually promise

The labelling rules for sunscreens in the EU come from Commission Recommendation 2006/647/EC. It is a recommendation rather than a regulation, but the industry follows it and national authorities use it as the benchmark. It sets a minimum of SPF 6 for anything sold as a sunscreen and requires that UVA protection be at least one third of the SPF, with a critical wavelength of at least 370 nm. Products meeting the UVA condition carry the UVA logo, the letters UVA in a circle.

CategoryLabelled SPF
Low6, 10
Medium15, 20, 25
High30, 50
Very high50+

SPF 50+ is therefore the top category, and SPF 50 is the top of 'high'. In this ranking only CeraVe's fluid is labelled SPF 50; the other nine are 50+.

The recommendation also lists claims that should not be made: '100% protection', 'sunblock', 'sunblocker', 'total protection' and claims that you do not need to re-apply, such as 'all day prevention'. It recommends warnings such as 'Do not stay too long in the sun, even while using a sunscreen product' and 'Over-exposure to the sun is a serious health threat'.

Crucially, the SPF on the pack is measured with 2 mg of product per square centimetre of skin. For the whole body of an average adult the recommendation translates that into six teaspoons, about 36 g. For the face it means far more than the pea-sized dab many people use, which is why real-life protection is usually well below the label.

Test methods

How SPF and UVA are measured: ISO 24444, 24443 and 23675

The SPF printed on a European pack is traditionally measured in vivo under ISO 24444. Which? describes its own SPF checks as following BS EN ISO 24444:2020 with at least ten volunteers per test: product is applied at 2 mg/cm², skin is exposed to a solar simulator and the dose that causes reddening is compared with unprotected skin. UVA protection is measured in vitro under ISO 24443:2012, with a spectrophotometer reading how much UVA a film of product on a plate absorbs. Which? labels a product a Don't Buy only after it fails the SPF claimed on the bottle and then fails the SPF or UVA test again on a retest.

Because in vivo testing means deliberately reddening volunteers' skin, the industry has worked on alternatives. ISO 23675:2024, published in December 2024, specifies an in vitro determination of SPF for emulsions and alcoholic formulations. According to ISO's own summary it determines static SPF only and is not applicable to water resistance claims. A further method, ISO 23698, has also been developed, but its ISO page did not load in our session, so we do not describe it here.

StandardMeasuresMethod
ISO 24444SPFin vivo, volunteers
ISO 24443UVA-PF, critical wavelengthin vitro, spectrophotometer
ISO 23675:2024static SPFin vitro

For buyers the practical point is simple: the UVA-PF figure exists for every product that carries the UVA logo, because it had to be measured. Brands just choose not to print it. Beauty of Joseon is the exception in this list.

UV filters

Annex VI and the new limits on homosalate, octocrylene and benzophenone-3

Only UV filters listed in Annex VI of the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 may be used in EU sunscreens, each with a maximum concentration and conditions. Three widely used filters have recently been restricted after opinions of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety on potential endocrine-disrupting properties.

FilterNew limitLegal actDeadlines
Benzophenone-36% face, hand and lip products; 2.2% body products incl. sprays; 0.5% other productsRegulation (EU) 2022/1176placing on market until 28 Jan 2023; making available until 28 Jul 2023
Octocrylene9% propellant sprays; 10% other productsRegulation (EU) 2022/1176same as above
Homosalate7.34%, face products only, not propellant spraysRegulation (EU) 2022/2195placing from 1 Jan 2025; making available from 1 Jul 2025

For a face sunscreen these limits still allow all three filters, at lower doses. Of the ingredient lists we could read (Garnier ×2, Beauty of Joseon, CeraVe, Bioderma's XDefense which we did not rank), none contains homosalate, octocrylene or benzophenone-3. Most rely on newer triazine and benzotriazole filters such as bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine and ethylhexyl triazone, with avobenzone (butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane) as a classic UVA filter.

A separate issue appeared in Stiftung Warentest's 2025 face test: ten of 14 products contained the UVA filter DHHB (diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate), and the testers looked for contamination with the plasticiser DnHexP, deducting points in four cases. In this ranking Beauty of Joseon and CeraVe list DHHB.

Independent tests

What Stiftung Warentest, Which? and Consumentenbond make public

Stiftung Warentest published a test of 14 face sunscreens with SPF 50 or 50+ in issue 4/2025 (27 March 2025, availability checked again on 6 March 2026). The free summary says eight of the 14 are a good choice, the rest have weaknesses or fail, and that two of the most expensive products did not reliably protect against UV radiation. Individual grades cost 4.90 euros to unlock, so we did not see them. Four products in this ranking are in that test: Eucerin Oil Control, Garnier Super UV with hyaluronic acid, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid and Nivea Invisible Daily UV-Fluid. We gave them a higher evidence score than untested products, but not a high one, because the result itself is unknown to us.

The same organisation also tested 26 body sunscreens (June 2025), reporting that cheap products are always among the winners, and 23 children's sunscreens (June 2026), where five failed on UV protection.

Which? tests SPF in vivo to ISO 24444 with at least ten volunteers and UVA in vitro to ISO 24443; its product verdicts are for members. Consumentenbond's face-sunscreen results are also paywalled; its public pages say products are tested in an independent laboratory for protection, ease of use, ingredients such as potential hormone disruptors and allergens, and packaging. We could not reach Öko-Test's or OCU's sunscreen pages in this session.

The pattern is worth knowing: in independent tests, failures tend to involve products that do not reach their labelled SPF or UVA protection, and price is not a reliable guide to which ones those will be.

Marketing decoded

Reef-safe, invisible, anti-ageing and other words on the pack

  • 'Reef-safe' / 'ocean-friendly': none of the EU acts we opened defines these terms. They usually mean a product avoids particular filters such as octocrylene or benzophenone-3. That says nothing about the rest of the formula. None of the ten products here leads with a reef claim on the pages we opened.
  • 'Very high protection': a legitimate term for SPF 50+ under Recommendation 2006/647/EC. Eucerin's Photoaging Control page talks of 'high UV protection' for an SPF 50+ product, which undersells it.
  • 'UVA protection above the EU recommendation' (Eucerin Oil Control): plausible and welcome, but without a UVA-PF value it cannot be checked.
  • 'Up to 400 nm' (La Roche-Posay Mexoryl 400): refers to the wavelength range covered, not the strength of protection.
  • 'Invisible': a texture claim about white cast, not a protection claim.
  • Percentages from use tests (98% agree it absorbs quickly): perception surveys run by the manufacturer, often with a few hundred people over two weeks. They are not efficacy data.
  • 'Sunblock' or 'all-day protection': claims the EU recommendation says should not be made. We saw none on these products.

Price per 100 ml is the honest comparison. In this ranking it runs from 26.25 euros (Garnier hyaluronic, Nivea) to 45 euros (La Roche-Posay). Since a correct face dose is far larger than most people use, a cheaper product you apply generously will usually protect better than an expensive one you ration.

Methodology

How this score is built

The score is the mean of four component scores — each carries equal weight and each rests on a named source. The full procedure is described in the methodology.

  1. 01Composition and specification

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. 02Evidence and studies

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. 03Owner feedback

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. 04Cost and value

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is SPF 50+ really better than SPF 30?

In laboratory terms yes: SPF 50+ is the EU's 'very high' category and SPF 30 is 'high'. In practice the difference is smaller than the amount you apply, because the SPF is measured at 2 mg/cm², more than most people use on the face.

What does the UVA circle logo mean?

Under Commission Recommendation 2006/647/EC it shows the product's UVA protection factor is at least one third of its SPF and its critical wavelength is at least 370 nm.

Why do so few brands publish the UVA-PF?

There is no legal obligation to print it; the UVA logo is enough. Of the ten products here, only Beauty of Joseon publishes measured UVA-PF values on its product page.

Are homosalate and octocrylene banned in the EU?

No. Octocrylene is limited to 10% (9% in propellant sprays) by Regulation (EU) 2022/1176. Homosalate is limited to 7.34% and allowed only in face products other than propellant sprays by Regulation (EU) 2022/2195. Benzophenone-3 is limited to 6% in face products.

How much sunscreen should I use on my face?

The SPF is tested at 2 mg/cm². The EU recommendation translates this into about 36 g for the whole adult body; for the face it is much more than a pea-sized amount.

Which of these products did Stiftung Warentest test?

Eucerin Oil Control, Garnier Super UV with hyaluronic acid, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid and Nivea Invisible Daily UV-Fluid were among the 14 face sunscreens in issue 4/2025. The grades are paywalled.

Is a 'reef-safe' sunscreen better?

None of the EU acts we checked defines 'reef-safe'. The phrase usually means certain filters are left out; it does not describe the protection level or the rest of the formula.

Do expensive face sunscreens protect better?

Not reliably. Stiftung Warentest's 2025 face test found that two of the most expensive products did not protect reliably against UV, and its body-sunscreen test found cheap products among the winners.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.
