Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF50+ PA++++

The only brand in this list that publishes its measured SPF and UVA-PF numbers, from two laboratories; the figures are honest enough to show the UVA margin is slim.

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

Beauty of Joseon's Korean cream is the most transparent product in this ranking. The brand's product page states the lab results behind the label: SPF 52.5 ± 5.8 and UVA-PF 16.1 ± 2.4 from a Korean laboratory, and SPF 63.1 ± 0.6 with UVA-PF 19 from a laboratory in Spain. The four UV filters are all modern, photostable types (ethylhexyl triazone, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate, diethylhexyl butamido triazone and methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol), the full ingredient list is published, rice extract is listed at 30% and there is no fragrance in it.

Read the numbers critically, though. The EU recommendation asks for a UVA-PF of at least one third of the SPF. Against the labelled 50 that is about 16.7; against the measured 63.1 it is about 21. The published UVA-PF of 19 passes the first reading and falls short of the second, and the Korean result (16.1 against 52.5) is also just under one third of its measured SPF. We have not seen an EU independent test of this product, and the brand page does not say whether the European stock uses the same formula. It contains DHHB, the filter Stiftung Warentest linked to possible DnHexP contamination. At 15.50 euros for 50 ml on notino.de (31 euros per 100 ml) it is good value, and owner feedback is strong: 4.9/5 from 3,501 reviews on the brand site and 4.6/5 from 119 on notino.de.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies5.0

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback8.6

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value8.4

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Relief Sun meet the EU one-third UVA rule?

On the brand's own Spanish lab data, UVA-PF 19 is more than one third of the labelled SPF 50 but less than one third of the measured SPF 63.1. The margin is thin either way; we cannot say how an EU authority would read it.

Is the version sold in Europe the same formula?

The brand page does not say. Check the INCI on the box you buy against the list published on beautyofjoseon.com.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.
