Best Bike Helmets
Every bicycle helmet on sale in the EU passes the same standard, EN 1078, and that standard only tests straight impacts. How a helmet handles the angled hit of a real fall is measured by a handful of independent laboratories, and their results vary far more than the prices do. This ranking of ten current road, commuting and city helmets is built on those results.
The key figure is the Virginia Tech STAR score, taken for the exact model from the laboratory's list of 311 helmets, set beside Folksam's Swedish tests and the 2024 ADAC and Stiftung Warentest test where the model was included. The cheapest helmet here costs €55 and holds five stars; one at about €209 holds four.
This is desk research. We did not wear, weigh or crash-test anything, and no helmet can promise to prevent an injury. What we can show is which claims are backed by a published test, which variant the test covered, and which figures the makers leave out.
Methodology note
Based on manufacturer product pages, the Virginia Tech bicycle helmet ratings as opened in October 2026, Folksam's adult helmet tests from 2017 to 2025, ADAC's published 2024 results and the free part of Stiftung Warentest's 2024 test. Nothing was tested hands-on. Virginia Tech tests helmets bought for the US market; European versions can differ, and we report a score only under the model name the laboratory uses. Stiftung Warentest grades are paywalled and are not cited. Certimoov, Which? and Consumentenbond results were not found or not examined for these models. Prices are in euros from the maker's EU shop where it sells direct (Specialized, Sweet Protection, MET, Lumos, Giro and Trek, the Irish sites for three of them) and from bike-components.de or Bike24 for POC, Lazer and Abus; POC's shop showed only a złoty price. Owner scores rest on the rating pages we could see, which for several models means a handful of reviews or none. Crash replacement terms were read for Trek, Sweet Protection, MET and Lumos only.

Key parameter
Virginia Tech STAR score and stars
The STAR score sums the concussion risk measured in 24 laboratory impacts, including rotation, which the mandatory EN 1078 test ignores; lower is better. Values are read from helmet.beam.vt.edu for the exact model name; where the name differs we say so.

8.7 Our verdict
The price of a helmet says little about how it does in independent impact tests. The Specialized Align II costs €55, has five Virginia Tech stars and was a Folksam 'Bra val' helmet in 2021, which puts it first here on overall value. For the lowest published scores, the POC Cytal (7.51) and the Sweet Protection Falconer 2Vi Mips (8.45) are the only two models that also won Folksam's 2025 adult test, at €339 and €249 list. The Specialized Mode is the best-scoring city helmet at 8.80, the MET Miles Mips the best-documented budget alternative, and the Lumos Ultra Mips the choice for riders who want lights, provided they buy the Mips version. The Abus Pedelec 2.0 MIPS is the best equipped and the most tested, and three laboratories agree that its impact protection is average. Check the exact variant against the laboratory's list before buying, and try the helmet on: a helmet that does not fit will not stay where the test assumed.
The standards
What EN 1078 tests, and what it leaves out
Every bicycle helmet sold in the EU must meet EN 1078, 'Helmets for pedal cyclists and for users of skateboards and roller skates'. The current version is EN 1078:2012+A1:2012. It covers construction and field of vision, shock absorption, the retention system and marking. In the shock test the helmet is dropped on to a flat anvil at 5.42–5.52 m/s, a little under 20 km/h, and on to a kerbstone anvil; peak acceleration must stay below 250 g. Those are straight impacts. The standard contains no test for the rotation of the head, although most falls from a bicycle hit the ground at an angle.
That is the gap Folksam, ADAC, Stiftung Warentest and Virginia Tech fill with oblique impacts. A European test method now exists as well: EN 17950:2024, 'Protective helmets – Test methods – Shock absorption including measuring rotational kinematics', published by BSI on 31 July 2024. It describes how to measure; it does not by itself add a pass mark to EN 1078.
| Document | Status | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| EN 1078:2012+A1:2012 | Required for sale | Straight impacts, under 250 g, strap tests |
| EN 17950:2024 | Test method | Measuring rotational kinematics |
| NTA 8776 | Voluntary (Netherlands) | Higher impact speeds, more coverage |
NTA 8776 is a Dutch technical agreement written under NEN for speed pedelecs, which assist up to 45 km/h. It builds on EN 1078 with higher impact speeds and a larger covered area, and it is not mandatory. In ADAC's 2024 test the three NTA 8776 helmets did not protect better than ordinary city helmets.
The key metric
Virginia Tech STAR: how the score works and where it stops
Virginia Tech's Helmet Lab, working with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, had rated 311 bicycle helmets when we opened the list. Each model goes through 24 impacts on a drop tower: six locations at two energies. The lab measures peak linear acceleration and rotational velocity, converts each impact into a concussion risk, weights it by how often cyclists meet that kind of impact and adds the results. A lower score is better. The lab recommends four or five stars.
Stars are relative. In July 2025 the thresholds were raised because most helmets had reached five stars; the number of five-star bicycle helmets fell from 167 to 38. On the list we opened, five stars ended at a score of 10.09 and four at 12.99.
| Helmet | Score | Stars |
|---|---|---|
| POC Cytal | 7.51 | 5 |
| Giro Aries Spherical | 8.40 | 5 |
| Sweet Protection Falconer 2Vi Mips | 8.45 | 5 |
| Specialized Mode | 8.80 | 5 |
| Specialized Align II | 9.55 | 5 |
| MET Miles Mips | 10.01 | 5 |
| Lazer Z1 KinetiCore | 10.06 | 5 |
| Lumos Ultra Mips | 10.20 | 4 |
| Abus Pedelec 2.0 MIPS | 11.14 | 4 |
| Bontrager Starvos WaveCel | 11.22 | 4 |
The limits: the score models concussion risk in laboratory impacts, not every injury or every crash; the lab itself notes that a person can sustain a head injury in the very best helmet. Prices are in US dollars at the time of testing. Variants are separate entries, as the POC Cytal Carbon (12.65) and the non-Mips Lumos Ultra (17.19) show.
European tests
Folksam, ADAC and Stiftung Warentest: what we could see
Folksam, the Swedish insurer, buys helmets that already carry CE approval and runs five tests on each: two straight impacts at 20 km/h and three oblique impacts at 22 km/h on the top, side and front, followed by a computer simulation with a brain model from KTH in Stockholm. Grade 4 earns the 'Bra val' label, for helmets more than 15% better than the average and better in both straight and oblique impacts. Grade 2 is average; grade 1 is more than 15% worse. The latest adult test was published on 10 June 2025.
| Helmet | Folksam | Year |
|---|---|---|
| POC Cytal | 4 – Bra val | 2025 |
| Sweet Protection Falconer 2Vi Mips | 4 – Bra val | 2025 |
| Specialized Align II MIPS | 4 – Bra val | 2021 |
| Specialized Mode MIPS | 3 | 2023 |
| Abus Pedelec 2.0 MIPS | 2 | 2021 |
| Bontrager Starvos WaveCel | 2 | 2021 |
ADAC and Stiftung Warentest tested 14 city helmets together and published in March 2024. Crash protection counts for 55%, with impacts at just under 20 km/h on a flat anvil and 21.6 km/h on a 45-degree slope. Stiftung Warentest's database holds 28 helmets, of which 11 are rated good; the grades cost €4.90 to unlock, so we cite ADAC's free figures only. Of our ten, only the Abus Pedelec 2.0 MIPS was included: 2.9 overall.
Certimoov, run with the University of Strasbourg, rates helmets from 0 to 5; we did not find results there for these ten models. Which? and Consumentenbond were not examined.
Marketing decoded
Mips, WaveCel, KinetiCore, vents and grams
Mips is a low-friction layer that lets the helmet move a little relative to the head; Specialized describes a sliding motion of 10 to 15 mm. Giro's Spherical design puts that slip plane between two foam liners. Trek's WaveCel is a collapsible cellular liner, Lazer's KinetiCore is built into the foam, and POC's older SPIN used pads. All claim to reduce rotational forces in certain angled impacts.
The test tables show that the label is not the result. Folksam's grades for helmets with Mips run from 1 to 4. With WaveCel, the Bontrager Specter was a 'Bra val' helmet in 2020 while the Starvos got grade 2. With KinetiCore, the Tonic and Verde got grade 1. The POC Omne Air SPIN scores 16.44 with two stars at Virginia Tech. Stiftung Warentest states that Mips is not a precondition for good protection.
| Claim | What to check |
|---|---|
| Vent count (9, 17, 21) | No common method; Specialized and Sweet Protection give none |
| Weight | Which size and which version: Giro and Lazer quote size M, CE |
| '#1 ranking' | The laboratory's current list |
| 'IP6X waterproof' | IP6X is a dust rating |
Weights measured by test bodies are often higher than the brochure: 434 g at Folksam against 370 g stated for the Abus, in a larger size. Two of the ten makers publish no weight on the product page at all.
Ownership
After a crash, lights and fit
A helmet is built to absorb one serious impact. Sweet Protection puts it plainly: never wear a helmet that has been involved in a severe crash. Several makers soften the cost of replacing one, and the terms differ more than the helmets do.
| Brand | Crash replacement as published |
|---|---|
| Trek | Free replacement within the first year |
| Sweet Protection | 40% off the recommended price within 3 years |
| Lumos | 30% off within 2 years |
| MET | Reduced cost within 2 years, via the national distributor |
| Lazer | Programme advertised; terms not opened |
| POC, Giro, Specialized, Abus | Not checked for this ranking |
Lights: the Lumos Ultra has front and rear LEDs and turn signals, and the Abus Pedelec 2.0 MIPS a rechargeable rear LED. The Specialized Mode and Lazer Z1 KinetiCore accept a clip-on light sold separately. ADAC's 2024 test found some helmets barely visible in the dark, so check for reflectors as well. A helmet light does not replace the lights required on the bicycle.
Fit decides whether any of this matters. ADAC failed one helmet in 2024 because its buckle broke in the roll-off test, and marked another down for slipping backwards. Owner reviews of both Specialized helmets mention straps that are hard to adjust. Measure your head, compare it with the maker's size table, and try the helmet with the glasses you ride in: ADAC notes pressure on the ears with some combinations.
Methodology
How this score is built
The score is the mean of four component scores — each carries equal weight and each rests on a named source. The full procedure is described in the methodology.
01Composition and specification
Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.
02Evidence and studies
Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.
03Owner feedback
Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.
04Cost and value
Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Which bike helmet has the best independent test results?+
Of the ten in this ranking, the POC Cytal: a Virginia Tech STAR score of 7.51 with five stars and grade 4 'Bra val' in Folksam's 2025 adult test. The Sweet Protection Falconer 2Vi Mips has the same Folksam grade and a score of 8.45.
Does a more expensive helmet protect better?+
Not reliably. The €55 Specialized Align II has five Virginia Tech stars and a Folksam 'Bra val' award from 2021, while the Abus Pedelec 2.0 MIPS at about €209 has four stars and an ADAC crash-protection grade of 3.3.
What does the CE mark on a bike helmet mean?+
It means the helmet meets EN 1078, which tests straight impacts at a little under 20 km/h with a limit of 250 g, plus the straps and buckle. It does not include a rotational impact test.
Is Mips necessary?+
No single system is. Folksam's grades for Mips helmets range from 1 to 4, and Stiftung Warentest states that Mips is not a precondition for good protection. Check the result for the exact model.
Can I use the Virginia Tech rating for the European version of a helmet?+
With care. Virginia Tech buys and tests helmets for the US market and lists variants separately. We report the score only where the model name matches, and say so where the name differs, as with the Trek Starvos WaveCel.
Do I need an NTA 8776 helmet for an e-bike?+
NTA 8776 is a voluntary Dutch agreement aimed at speed pedelecs that assist up to 45 km/h. In ADAC's 2024 test the three NTA 8776 helmets did not protect better than ordinary city helmets. Check your national rules for speed pedelecs.
When should a helmet be replaced?+
After any serious impact. Sweet Protection advises never to wear a helmet that has been in a severe crash. Trek replaces a crashed helmet free in the first year; Sweet Protection, Lumos and MET offer discounts within two or three years.
Can a helmet prevent a head injury?+
No helmet can promise that. Virginia Tech notes that a person can sustain a head injury with even the very best head protection; the ratings compare how much helmets reduce measured forces in laboratory impacts.
