Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The Aries Spherical scores 8.40 with five stars at Virginia Tech, rank 13 of 311 on the list we opened. Giro's product page still carries the line 'Virginia Tech #1 ranking'. That was accurate at some point, but twelve helmets now score lower, a reminder to check the laboratory's own list rather than the box.

The datasheet is good: 265 g in size M for the CE version, CE EN 1078, 21 vents, two-density EPS and three adult sizes from 52 to 62.5 cm on the page. The description on the same page says 270 g, a small inconsistency. Spherical Technology places the Mips slip plane between two foam liners, so no plastic layer sits against the head.

Folksam has not tested the Aries; the Giro Aether MIPS was a 'Bra val' helmet in 2019 and the Helios Spherical got grade 3 in 2021, which says nothing certain about this model. Giro's Irish shop lists €319.95, cut to €207.97 on some colours, while new colours cost €329.99. A helmet for road riders who put ventilation and low weight first and can find it discounted.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.5

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies8.6

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback7.0

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value5.0

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.
