Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

At 220 g for a CE size M, the Z1 KinetiCore is the lightest helmet in this ranking by 45 g. Lazer builds its rotational protection into the foam itself under the KinetiCore name. Virginia Tech lists the Lazer Z1 KinetiCore at 10.06 with five stars; the older Lazer Z1 MIPS is a separate entry at 12.16 with four stars.

The score sits two places above the four-star boundary. Folksam has not tested the Z1, and its results for other KinetiCore models are mixed: grade 2 for the Codax in 2025, grade 1 for the Tonic in 2023 and for the Verde in 2025. Those are different helmets, but they show that a technology name is not a result.

Lazer's site lists three sizes (52–56, 55–59 and 58–61 cm), the Advanced RollSys fit system, a clip-on Aeroshell and a rear LED as accessories, plus a crash replacement programme whose terms we did not open. There is no price on lazersport.com; Bike24 showed a recommended price of €259.95 and a selling price of €175.99. We found no owner ratings to cite. For riders who put weight first.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies7.3

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback6.0

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value6.8

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is KinetiCore?

KinetiCore is Lazer's own rotational impact protection, which the company describes as built into the helmet rather than added as a separate liner. The Z1 KinetiCore scores 10.06 with five stars at Virginia Tech.

Is the Lazer Z1 MIPS the same helmet?

No. Virginia Tech lists the older Lazer Z1 MIPS separately at 12.16 with four stars.
