ABL eMH1 1W1101

A deliberately simple, German-made wallbox whose datasheet lists both an integrated 30 mA Type A RCD and electronic 6 mA DC detection, at well under half the price of the smart boxes.

Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The eMH1 suits drivers who want safe, plain 11 kW charging and nothing else: no app, no WLAN, no cloud. ABL's own datasheet for the 1W1101 is unusually explicit about protection: an integrated residual-current device Type A, 30 mA, plus electronic DC fault-current detection at IΔn d.c. ≥ 6 mA, a four-pole contactor and welding detection. It cites IEC 61851-1 Ed. 3, IEC 61851-21-2 and IEC 60364-7-722, gives an operating range of −25 to 40 °C, IP54, 272 × 221 × 116 mm and about 4.5 kg, with a tethered Type 2 cable of about 6.35 m (The Mobility House says 6 m). Access is by key switch.

ADAC's budget-wallbox test of October 2024 graded an ABL eMH1 2.1 at a then price of €229; the variant ADAC bought may not be the 1W1101 sold here for €439 (reduced from €549) at The Mobility House.

What is missing: there is no energy meter in the specifications, so no MID billing, and the only interface is RS485 – no OCPP, no app, no PV-surplus mode out of the box (The Mobility House mentions compatibility with ABL's eMS home system after a software update). For §14a EnWG control your grid operator will need a separate solution.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification7.5

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies7.5

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback6.5

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value8.5

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

What we liked

  • Integrated RCD Type A 30 mA plus 6 mA DC detection
  • Complete datasheet: −25 to 40 °C, IP54, 4.5 kg
  • ADAC grade 2.1 for an eMH1 (October 2024)
  • €439 including the protection hardware
  • Key switch, no account or cloud required

Worth knowing

  • No energy meter listed, so no MID billing
  • No app, WLAN, LAN or OCPP; RS485 only
  • No phase switching or PV mode out of the box
  • No standby figure or IK rating published

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does the ABL eMH1 work with an app or solar system?

Not out of the box. The datasheet lists RS485 only; The Mobility House mentions compatibility with ABL’s eMS home system after a software update.

Is the RCD really built in?

Yes. ABL’s datasheet lists an integrated RCD Type A, 30 mA, plus electronic DC fault-current detection at ≥ 6 mA.

Principles

We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
