Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

Included as the honest counterweight to the category's marketing, because Emma is the brand most European buyers think of first.

Stiftung Warentest graded it 2.7 "befriedigend" in issue 10/2025, published 25 September 2025 among 18 products. Its comment: "Liegeeigenschaften fallen in Rücken- und Seitenlage durchwachsen aus" — lying properties are mixed in both back and side positions. Comfort, resilience, durability and the cover were all fine; the support was insufficiently balanced.

Lying properties carry 35% of the overall grade — the single largest component — and that is precisely where this mattress underperformed. Two IKEA mattresses at €159 and €179 scored better.

The construction is a seven-layer hybrid: ThermoSync graphite foam, Airgocell, MemoryAdapt, SupportBase and a seven-zone pocket-spring core, at 27 cm — the tallest here. Stiftung Warentest measured 26.5 cm and 17.70 kg. The cover is 100% polyester, fully removable and washable at 40 °C. There is a 100-night trial and up to 10 years of warranty.

No foam densities are published for this mattress at all. For context, Emma does publish them for the cheaper Emma One: Airgocell top layer around 35 kg/m³, viscoelastic middle around 45, and an HRX base layer of about 30 kg/m³. Thirty is below the recommended 40 kg/m³ floor, and the base layer does most of the structural work.

The pricing deserves comment. Emma's own site lists the Original Pro at €1,039.98 RRP for 80×200 while test.de records €566 as the actual purchase price for 90×200. A permanent discount that large makes the list price meaningless — and this is the norm in the category, not an outlier.

One further note on the declaration: Stiftung Warentest recorded the tested unit as declared "weich" (soft), while Emma markets it as "balanced".

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification6.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies5.5

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback7.8

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value5.4

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why did the most famous bed-in-a-box brand score worst here?

Because Stiftung Warentest weights lying properties at 35% of the overall grade and assesses them across seven body types in two sleeping positions — and it found this mattress's lying properties mixed in both positions. Everything else about it tested acceptably. The bed-in-a-box pitch is built on one mattress suiting everyone; Stiftung Warentest's 2025 method exists precisely to test that claim, and in the March round exactly one mattress of fourteen passed it. It was not this one.

Is the €1,039.98 RRP real?

Not in any practical sense. Emma's own site lists that as the RRP for 80×200 while test.de records €566 as the actual purchase price for the larger 90×200. A permanent standing discount makes a list price a marketing anchor rather than a price. This is the norm across the category — Stiftung Warentest's former chairman specifically criticised the industry's "Mondpreise" (moon prices) and forged test seals. Ignore "was" prices entirely.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
