Proton VPN
The strongest governance story here — a Swiss company majority-owned by a non-profit foundation, five annual public no-logs audits and fully open-source apps — but Proton's VPN-only prices would not load, so the price shown is the Proton Unlimited bundle.

Review
What this product is
Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.
Proton VPN suits buyers who weight governance and transparency above price. It is operated by Proton AG in Geneva, whose primary shareholder is the non-profit Proton Foundation. Every app — Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and the browser extension — is open source and has been audited by independent researcher Ruben Santamarta (article updated December 2025). Securitum's no-logs audit is now in its fifth annual round (2022–2026), and the report is public. The transparency report lists 458 Swiss legal orders since 2017, 47 of them in the first half of 2026, none of which produced identifying data.
The price is the problem for this ranking. Proton's VPN pricing page loaded with placeholder figures, so we could not verify the VPN Plus price. The only EUR figures on an official Proton page were for bundles that include VPN Plus features: Proton Unlimited at EUR 119.88 a year (EUR 9.99 a month) or EUR 12.99 monthly. That is the figure used here, and it overstates the cost of a VPN-only plan; check VPN Plus pricing at checkout. Plus covers 10 devices, 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries and a 30-day guarantee, and a free tier exists.
Owner feedback on Trustpilot is poor — 2.2 from 984 reviews, with complaints about speed, blocked sites, support and cancellation.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why is Proton VPN's price higher here than elsewhere?
Proton's VPN pricing page loaded with placeholder figures, so we used the only verified EUR price on an official Proton page: Proton Unlimited at EUR 9.99 a month on a 1-year term. VPN Plus on its own should cost less; check at checkout.
Has Proton ever handed over VPN user data?
Its transparency report says it received 458 legally binding Swiss orders between 2017 and June 2026 and could not provide identifying data in any of them because it keeps no such logs.
