Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

Mullvad suits buyers who care more about verifiable privacy than about introductory discounts. The pricing page states EUR 5 a month including VAT, whatever length you pay for, so there is no renewal jump to plan around and no multi-year lock-in. Accounts are a number, not an email address, and up to 5 devices can be connected.

The audit record is the deepest in this ranking. Mullvad's audit archive lists Cure53's fourth infrastructure audit (published 27 June 2024), Radically Open Security (9 August 2023), X41 D-Sec on accounts and payments (21 January 2026), Assured on its GotaTun implementation (6 March 2026) and Leviathan on the Android app (1 June 2026). Mullvad VPN AB and its parent Amagicom AB are Swedish and, per the company, 100% owned by the two founders; the apps are open source.

What holds it back: Mullvad itself disclosed Android leak issues on 12 May and 10 September 2026 and an exit-IP fingerprinting issue on 20 May 2026 — fixed and published openly, but real. Owner feedback on Trustpilot is thin and mixed (3.4 from 185 reviews), with complaints about DNS filtering and network-setting conflicts. The refund window is 14 days, shorter than the 30 days most rivals offer, and cash payments are not refundable.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.8

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies8.6

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback6.4

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value8.6

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
