Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The best value mid-range shoe in the ranking, and the lightest by a clear margin.

RTINGS measured 242.4 g in a men's US 9 — 47 g lighter than the Brooks, which you feel over an hour. Measured stack is 35.0 / 25.2 mm giving a 9.8 mm drop against 8 mm advertised. The midsole is NITROFOAM, a nitrogen-injected aliphatic TPU, single density with no plate.

PUMAGRIP is the reason to buy this shoe. It is widely regarded as the best-gripping outsole compound on the market, and grip on wet European roads in autumn and winter matters more for a new runner than any efficiency claim. On the previous Nitro 4, lab testing measured 3.9 mm thickness with only 1.1 mm wear.

Despite being officially neutral, RTINGS scored stability 8.4 out of 10 — high for a neutral shoe — thanks to sole flare and rearfoot sidewalls. That is stability achieved through geometry rather than through the medial-post "motion control" approach the evidence does not support.

The fit warning is specific and important. Doctors of Running found it runs "a touch narrow" through the midfoot and forefoot, and Puma's European site offers regular width only. If you have wide feet, this is the wrong shoe and no amount of lacing will fix it.

Puma's own page claims roughly 800 km expected lifespan. Treat that as marketing: it carries no citation, and the actual research on shoe degradation is considerably messier than any single number suggests.

A buying tip. RunRepeat scored the predecessor Nitro 4 at 93/100 "Superb", and it has appeared on Geizhals from €65.95. If you can find the Nitro 4 in your size, it is arguably the single best-value beginner purchase available in Europe.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification9.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies8.6

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback8.8

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value9.0

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does outsole grip actually matter?

More than most specifications, and more in Europe than in California. A new runner on wet pavement, painted road markings or wet leaves in October has a real slip risk, and confidence on those surfaces determines whether you go out at all. PUMAGRIP's reputation is one of the few genuinely uncontested claims in running footwear.

Should I buy the older Nitro 4 instead?

If you can find your size, quite possibly. RunRepeat scored it 93/100 "Superb" and it has appeared from around €66 on European price comparison sites. Year-on-year changes in daily trainers are usually incremental, and buying last season's model at a 50% discount is the standard European pattern for getting a good shoe cheaply.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
