What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The efficiency pick, and the cheapest genuinely well-labelled tyre in the ranking.

Rolling resistance class B is unique here. Every other tyre in this ranking is C or D. Each class step is worth roughly 0.1 l/100 km, so B against the Dunlop's and Falken's D is about 0.2 l/100 km — over a set's lifetime, a meaningful sum. The full label in 225/45 R17 94V XL MFS reads rolling resistance B, wet grip B, 70 dB class B, with EPREL registration 511251.

ADAC also confirmed the wear. In the 2025 test — conducted in 225/40 R18, a different size — it was graded "befriedigend" with specific notes of "gut im Verschleiß", good on wear, and good fuel economy. The same test found it weaker in dry and wet handling and on snow and ice.

The handling picture is consistent across sizes, and it is the honest limitation. The non-P WR Snowproof finished eleventh of sixteen in the ADAC 2023 test in this exact size with a grade of 3.0 — though notably it achieved snow grade A, one of only two in that field, at 69 dB. So the Nokian family in this size delivers snow performance and efficiency, and gives up handling to do it.

At €103.69 against a €187.50 list price this is the second-cheapest tyre here and the cheapest with an above-average label.

Buy it if you cover high winter mileage and value running cost. It is the wrong choice if your priority is confident handling on a fast D-segment car — which, given what 225/45 R17 is usually fitted to, is a real consideration.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.6

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies6.8

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback7.8

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value9.4

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is rolling resistance B worth choosing a tyre for?

It is worth roughly 0.2 l/100 km against a class D tyre, which over 30,000 winter kilometres is around 60 litres of fuel. That is real money but it is not transformative, and it should not outweigh a substantially better handling result. Buy this tyre if you cover high winter mileage in conditions where its mid-pack handling is not a limitation — a commuter doing motorway miles, rather than someone driving a fast car on twisting roads.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
