Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The VM85 Connect combines a 5-inch parent unit on a 2.4 GHz FHSS link with a Wi-Fi camera that streams up to Full HD (1080p) to the Motorola Nursery app. The camera pans by motor, tilts digitally and has 2x digital zoom; a multi-colour mood light, lullabies, audiobooks and personal recordings sit on the baby unit. Up to four cameras can be shown in split screen or patrol mode.

Motorola Nursery's specification is honest in an unflattering way. The parent unit has a 2,000 mAh battery with '5 hours playtime', so it will not last a night away from its charger, and its display is 480 × 272 pixels: the 1080p figure applies to the app, not to the handheld screen. Range is given as up to 1,000 ft, roughly 300 metres, with no indoor figure.

Security is described as 'triple layer security protection' without naming a protocol or cipher. The app offers 24-hour event monitoring, notifications for motion, sound and temperature, and photo and video capture; the product page does not say whether any of this requires a paid plan or how long clips are kept, so we mark subscription terms as not published. Which? names Motorola among the brands in its baby-monitor tests, but results are for members and we cannot tell whether this model is included. The official page shows no customer reviews. €159.99 on the manufacturer's site is fair for a motorised hybrid if the parent unit lives on its stand.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification7.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies5.0

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback5.5

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value6.7

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.
