Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The Solo suits people who drink their coffee black. It has no milk system: the two programmes are espresso and café crème, with water volume adjustable from 30 to 220 ml, three strength levels and three brew temperatures (85, 90 and 95 °C). With nothing to froth, the hygiene work is limited to the brew group, drip tray and descaling.

Melitta's product page is clear: conical steel grinder with 5 steps, removable brew group, 1.2 litre tank, 125 g bean container, 334 x 200 x 459 mm, 8 kg, 1400 W, pre-infusion, a two-cup function, automatic switch-off and a 0-watt switch. The page showed 349 euros, while Melitta's overview listed the Solo range from 329 euros. The same page is one of the few places where a maker shows consumable prices next to the machine: cleaning tablets from 3.49 euros and a Pro Aqua filter cartridge from 11.99 euros.

The weak point is evidence. We found no Stiftung Warentest or other independent result for the current E950 in the sources we opened, so the test score is low by rule, not because of a bad result. Owner data is limited to 27 reviews in Melitta's own shop, averaging 4.8. The 125 g bean container and 1.2 litre tank are the smallest in the ranking, and neither pump rating nor noise is published.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies3.0

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback7.5

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value8.0

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can the Melitta Solo make cappuccino?

No. The E950 has no milk frother; Melitta sells a separate 'Solo & Milk' model for that. The Solo makes espresso and café crème only.

What do the consumables cost?

Melitta's product page listed Perfect Clean cleaning tablets from 3.49 euros and a Pro Aqua filter cartridge from 11.99 euros when we checked. How often they are needed depends on water hardness and use.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
