Makita Makita DHP486
130 Nm hard and 65 Nm soft, on the largest tool platform in Europe. But Toolbrothers flagged the absence of kickback protection — a real concern at this torque level.

Review
What this product is
Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.
Makita's LXT platform carries more than 350 tools, the largest tool selection of any battery system, and that is the primary reason to buy into it. If you expect to accumulate a broad collection over a decade, the depth of the range and the strength of the European service network are worth real money.
The tool publishes both torque figures — 130 Nm hard joint and 65 Nm soft joint — placing it clearly in the professional tier. Brushless motor, 13 mm metal keyless chuck, two gears at 0–550 and 0–2,100 rpm, 31,500 bpm hammer action, 21 clutch stages plus drill, and 50 mm wood / 13 mm steel / 16 mm masonry capacity. Weight is 2.7 kg with battery, the joint heaviest here.
The specific criticism worth knowing. Toolbrothers, reviewing in November 2021, flagged that this model has no kickback or anti-jam protection. At 130 Nm hard torque, a bit that binds in steel or a knot in timber transfers that force directly to your wrist. Bosch, Metabo and Milwaukee all offer electronic kickback control on comparable tools, and Stiftung Warentest scores jamming response as part of safety. This is a genuine gap, not a specification nitpick.
The independent evidence is otherwise thin: testberichte.de's composite is 1.7 "gut", and the sibling DHP487Z appeared in the Stiftung Warentest 6/2025 field, but we could not verify its individual score.
This tool also illustrates the torque-reporting problem better than any other. Makita has advertised the same hammer drill at 970 in-lb maximum torque in the United States and 130 Nm maximum hard fastening torque in the United Kingdom. Those are not the same measurement, for the same product, from the same manufacturer.
At €217 bare and €392 for the kit with two 5.0 Ah packs, it is the most expensive tool here. The platform justifies it; the tool alone does not clearly beat the €80 Einhell on any measure a homeowner cares about.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is the largest tool platform worth paying for?
It depends how many tools you expect to own. If your collection will be a drill, an impact driver and maybe a circular saw, almost any mainstream platform covers that and the platform argument is weak. If you expect fifteen tools over ten years, the depth of Makita LXT and the strength of its service network genuinely matter. For a homeowner, it is usually not the deciding factor.
How serious is the missing kickback protection?
It matters at this torque level. When a drill bit binds — hitting rebar, a knot, or the far side of thick steel — the tool stops and the motor's torque goes into rotating the tool instead. At 130 Nm hard torque that force reaches your wrist. Electronic kickback control detects the sudden rotation and cuts power in milliseconds. Using the side handle every time is the practical mitigation, and you should.
