Levoit Core 400S

A 400 m³/h cylinder for mid-size living rooms and the best-evidenced Levoit: HouseFresh measured the European version itself. Levoit's own noise and wattage figures look optimistic next to those measurements.

Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

The Core 400S is for rooms of roughly 25 to 35 m² where the smaller Levoits run out of breath. Levoit publishes 400 m³/h and '83 m² twice per hour'; at five air changes per hour that is about 33 m².

Its strength is independent evidence. HouseFresh, which buys and measures purifiers itself, cleared its 728 cubic-foot (about 20.6 m³) test room of PM1 in 30 minutes with the European version and in 24 minutes with the US version. On the US unit it measured a top-speed PM1 CADR of 249 cfm, about 423 m³/h, falling to 134 cfm at the fastest setting below 45 dBA.

The same measurements show where the spec sheet flatters. Levoit states 24–48 dB and 24 W maximum; HouseFresh recorded 60.3 dBA at one metre and 39.6 W at top speed on the US version. The versions differ, but expect the top speed to be clearly audible.

The filter is described as HEPA with 99.97 % at 0.3 µm, with no EN 1822 class. Levoit recommends a new filter at least every 12 months and calls the unit 100 % ozone-free. Dimensions are missing from the German page, and so is a filter price. On levoit.de, 33 of 43 reviews give five stars.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification7.5

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies7.6

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback7.5

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value8.4

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

What we liked

  • 400 m³/h for €219.99: about €0.55 per m³/h
  • European version measured by HouseFresh: test room cleared of PM1 in 30 minutes
  • 24 dB in sleep mode according to Levoit
  • Stated as 100 % ozone-free
  • Filter change only about once every 12 months

Worth knowing

  • No EN 1822 filter class, only 'HEPA' and 99.97 % at 0.3 µm
  • HouseFresh measured 60.3 dBA and 39.6 W at top speed on the US version, against Levoit's 48 dB and 24 W
  • 83 m² claim assumes two air changes per hour; about 33 m² at five
  • Dimensions and filter price not on the German product page

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why do HouseFresh's noise figures differ from Levoit's?

Levoit states 24–48 dB without naming the measuring distance; HouseFresh measured 60.3 dBA at about one metre on the US version at top speed. Different versions and methods explain part of the gap, but the top speed is not quiet.

Core 400S or Core 300S Pro?

The 400S delivers 400 m³/h against 240 m³/h for €70 more, so it costs less per cubic metre of clean air and can run on a slower, quieter speed in the same room. The 300S Pro only makes sense for rooms up to about 20 m².

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
