IKEA STARKVIND

The most honest data sheet under €150: IKEA states CADR, noise and wattage at both ends of the fan range, calls the filter EPA 12 and recommends just 20 m².

Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

STARKVIND suits a bedroom or small living room and anyone who wants straight numbers. IKEA publishes a CADR range of 55 to 270 m³/h with the particle filter alone, and 50 to 240 m³/h once the optional gas filter is fitted, so you can see what the extra filter costs in airflow. The recommended room is 20 m², which works out at about 5.6 air changes per hour: no stretching.

Noise and power are given the same way: 24 dB and about 2 W at the lowest speed, 53 dB and 33 W at the highest with the particle filter. That tells you the quiet setting delivers 55 m³/h, a fifth of the headline value, which is exactly the information most brands withhold.

The particle filter is declared as EPA 12, one class below H13. For a room purifier that is not a real drawback, but it is not a HEPA filter and IKEA does not pretend otherwise. The filter should be replaced about every six months, twice as often as the 12-month filters of Philips or Levoit; we did not open the filter price pages.

IKEA's German site shows 4.3 out of 5 from 118 reviews. We found no independent laboratory test of the STARKVIND, which is why the evidence score is low.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.0

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies5.0

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback7.6

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value8.6

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

What we liked

  • CADR, noise and power published for lowest and highest speed
  • 270 m³/h for €119: about €0.44 per m³/h
  • Honest 20 m² recommendation, about 5.6 air changes per hour
  • Filter class stated plainly: EPA 12
  • Optional gas filter, with its effect on CADR disclosed (240 m³/h)

Worth knowing

  • EPA 12, not a HEPA-class (H13) filter
  • Filter change recommended about every 6 months
  • 53 dB at top speed
  • No independent test found

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is EPA 12 good enough?

Under EN 1822 an E12 filter retains at least 99.5 % at the most penetrating particle size, against 99.95 % for H13. In a room purifier the air passes the filter many times, so the difference matters less than the CADR.

Should I add the gas filter?

Only if odours or gases are your concern. IKEA's own figures show the top CADR falling from 270 to 240 m³/h with the gas filter fitted, and the gas filter adds to the replacement cost.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
