Review

What this product is

Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.

Not the cheapest, but the one you can actually verify — and in a category where almost nothing is disclosed, that is worth paying for.

Airalo publishes its fair use policy in plain terms: unlimited plans give 3 GB per day at full speed, then throttle to 1 Mbps for the rest of the 24-hour period, resetting daily. Holafly and Yesim do not put their thresholds on the product page at all.

Tethering is explicitly unrestricted — Airalo's help pages state there is no limit on tethering or the number of connected devices. Compare Holafly's 1 GB per day hotspot cap.

And it is the only provider whose host networks are documented. Independent testing found Eurolink connecting to O2 and Vodafone in Germany, Orange in France, Movistar / Orange / Yoigo / Vodafone in Spain, and WindTre / TIM / Vodafone in Italy — with measured average download speeds of 60.2 Mbps in Berlin, 68.3 in Madrid and 78.7 in Milan. Every other provider here is a black box on this.

Coverage is quoted as 39 to 42 countries depending on the source; Airalo's own page says "41 countries and networks", which is not the same as 41 countries. A separate EU + UK product covers 28 countries and networks, unlimited only, at $58 for 30 days.

The pricing needs a warning. The 10 GB / 30 day benchmark of $31 comes from esimdb; Airalo's own Europe page served us unlimited-only tiers when we checked, suggesting a migration or an A/B test in progress. Verify both before buying.

Note also that Airalo's 30-day unlimited at $71 sits alongside its 50 GB / 30 day plan at $70 — you pay the same for a 3 GB daily cap as for a straightforward 50 GB bucket. The unlimited framing is rarely the better deal.

Trustpilot 4.1 from 42,305 reviews with 16% one-star — the weakest distribution among the large providers here, though Airalo replies to 84% of negative reviews.

Component scores

Where the score
comes from.

Four components, equal weight, each on a 0–10 scale and each resting on a named source. The overall score is their mean — the full procedure is in the methodology.

  1. Composition and specification8.2

Declared composition and specification: active ingredients and their concentrations, energy classes, standards, technical parameters — and what the manufacturer leaves unsaid.

  2. Evidence and studies9.0

Verification of the manufacturer's claims against outside sources: laboratory reports, industry testing, safety data sheets, certificates and regulatory decisions.

  3. Owner feedback8.0

Analysis of verified reviews written after extended use, together with recurring fault reports for the model or series.

  4. Cost and value7.4

Price set against what the product actually delivers, plus costs incurred later — consumables, energy, servicing, subscriptions — over the lifespan typical for the category.

What we liked

  • Publishes its fair use policy explicitly: 3 GB/day then 1 Mbps
  • Unlimited tethering with no device limit, stated in writing
  • The only provider with documented per-country host networks
  • Independently measured speeds: 60-79 Mbps across Berlin, Madrid and Milan
  • Top-up supported — no need to buy a new eSIM
  • Separate EU + UK product for 28 countries
  • 5G on all plans

Worth knowing

  • approx. €2.67/GB — roughly double Ubigi
  • Country count disputed between 39, 41 and 42
  • "41 countries and networks" is not 41 countries
  • Airalo's own site served unlimited-only tiers, contradicting the fixed-GB listing
  • Trustpilot 4.1 with 16% one-star, the weakest large-provider distribution
  • 30-day unlimited at $71 costs the same as 50 GB at $70
  • Data only — no number, no SMS

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is an unlimited plan better value than a 50 GB one?

Usually not. Airalo's 30-day unlimited costs $71 while its 50 GB / 30 day plan costs $70 — and the unlimited plan caps you at 3 GB per day, which over 30 days is 90 GB but with a hard daily ceiling and a 1 Mbps throttle beyond it. If you use less than roughly 3 GB a day, an unlimited plan is a fixed plan with worse economics and an added restriction.

Why do host networks matter?

Enormously, and almost nobody publishes them. A travel eSIM resells wholesale roaming capacity, and which local network you attach to determines your actual speed and coverage. Ookla's 2026 study found response times to the same network differing by a factor of ten between eSIM brands, and latency up to 30 times worse than local subscribers on the same tower. Airalo is the only provider here whose network partners are documented.

Principles

The manufacturer makes claims.
We check what the evidence says.

Every ranking follows the same protocol: an analysis of composition and specification, verification of claims against available studies, a review of verified owner feedback, and an assessment of price against what the product delivers.
