Review
What this product is
Written after the analysis, from the same sources the score is built on: the manufacturer's documentation, available studies and verified owner feedback.
La Roche-Posay's dermatological positioning and European pharmacy distribution make this one of the most widely bought retinol serums on the continent, and the formula is competent. It is also the product in this ranking where the regulatory picture is least transparent.
It contains two of the three restricted substances. Retinol and retinyl palmitate are both named in Annex III entry 376 of the Cosmetics Regulation as amended, which means their combined retinol equivalent is what the 0.3% cap applies to. Neither concentration is published by the brand or the retailer. Widely repeated figures of 0.3% retinol plus 0.1% retinyl palmitate circulate online, but we could not verify them from La Roche-Posay or any retailer, so we do not state them.
This is also why we will not give you a compliance verdict. Regulation (EU) 2024/996 does not define "retinol equivalent" or provide conversion factors for retinyl palmitate. Without those factors and without the concentrations, no honest calculation is possible — and any site that gives you one has made it up.
The formula itself is well constructed. Niacinamide appears high in the ingredient list, which is a genuinely good pairing: it is well tolerated with retinoids and supports the barrier. Glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, adenosine and glycine soja oil round it out. La Roche-Posay's sensitive-skin formulating record is the reason many dermatologists suggest it as a first retinoid.
The packaging is a glass bottle with a dropper, which is the wrong format for a light- and air-sensitive active — the same criticism that applies to The Ordinary's retinols. Keep it out of the bathroom windowsill and finish it in reasonable time.
At €38.59 for 30 ml the street price is well below the €46.50 RRP, and price comparison shows offers from €29.00.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why won't you tell me if it's EU-compliant?
Because we cannot know, and neither can anyone else who is being honest. Compliance depends on the combined retinol equivalent of the retinol and retinyl palmitate it contains. The brand does not publish either concentration, and Regulation (EU) 2024/996 does not define retinol equivalent or give a conversion factor for retinyl palmitate. Any site that publishes a calculated figure for this product has invented it. What we can say is that the product is on sale in the EU, and that products placed on the market before 1 November 2025 may legally be sold through until 1 May 2027.
Why does it contain two different retinoids?
Retinyl palmitate is an ester — a gentler, more stable but considerably weaker precursor that needs an extra metabolic step to reach retinoic acid. Combining it with retinol is a common approach to spread activity over time and reduce irritation. The trade-off is that a meaningful share of the total vitamin A in the bottle is in the least active form, and without disclosed concentrations you cannot judge the balance.
